RAB 2007 Will Move Radio Industry Forward

Chances are that if are you attending RAB 2007 - Feb. 8-11 in Dallas, TX - you sit on the sales side of the radio industry fence. Programmers who attend won't find much on the menu.

I've been critical of the RAB for failing to devote enough of its agenda to new media.
"There was never a question why radio wasn't moving online effectively. RAB wasn't giving guidance."

Past conventions included one, maybe two sessions with innocuous names such as "Making Money With NTR" and "Building Banners for Profit." There was never a question why radio wasn't moving online effectively. RAB wasn't giving guidance.

This year it's different. RAB 2007 has quite a few sessions speaking about online and new media items. Three speakers offer sound ideas for your options: Holland Cooke, McVay Media; Jim Taszarek, Taz Media; and Bill Figenshu, SWMX. (Their subjects, respectively, are "Revenue Right Under Your Nose," "Website Selling Made Simple," and "The New Efficient Frontier.") All have been following the online world for a decade, and have vocalized that radio could use it more effectively.

Other RAB 2007 sessions with titles that address new media, but with speakers I'm less familiar with, are:
Radio's Most Overlooked Opportunity
Wayne Ens, Ens Media
New Revenue in a Digital Age
Sheila Kirby, Interep / Sue Novicki, Morrison & Abraham
Radio Mobile Marketing: Interactivity on a New Frequency
Bob Bentz, Advanced Telecom
Radio 2.0: Interactive, Measurable and Sexy
Interep Panel
Advertising's New Synergy: How Radio and the Internet Work Together
Mary Bennett/ RAB, Jim Peacock/Peacock Research
High Tech, High Dollar Programs
Elaine Clark, RDS/Emmis
A Road Map for Internet Ad Sales
Marie Sola, Local Thunder Marketing/Larry Downes, SAGA Comm.
Radio & Cell Phones = More Revenue
Ivan Braiker
It Ain't Just Radio: Where Else Can You Find New and Bigger Revenue?
Sylvia Allen, Allen Consulting
New Media: Expanding Radio Revenues in the Digital World
Dave Casper and John Potter, RAB/Dallas
A New Media Sales Clinic
Jake Karger/Zachary Braiker, Refine & Focus

There is a clear move to educate at RAB 2007. Let's cross fingers that attendees are receptive to change, because the only way radio will show signs of improvement is if it does change.

Publisher's Note: I will be attending RAB 2007 and look forward to discussing your use of new media. If you'd like to schedule a time to chat, send me an email.
