Radio Listening on Mobile Devices

Only recently has the radio industry shown interest in competing online. Now with the explosion of mobile devices over the last six months, radio executives have become concerned that "mobile" may drain listeners from its broadcasts and streams. (Think about all the buzz generated by Pandora.)

RadioRow is an Audio Graphics web site that lists radio stations. All kinds of broadcast and pureplay radio stations are there. Each time one is accessed it shows up in our analytics program.

I've worked for companies posting over 30 million monthly pageviews, so I'm not dealing with enormous numbers at RadioRow; its nearly quarter-million monthly pageviews, though, give me solid data for analysis.

One point caught my eye this week: As a percentage of total visitors, the number of people using mobile devices to access a radio stream or web site is highest on the weekend.

"As a percentage of total visitors, the number of people using mobile devices to access a radio stream or web site is highest on the weekend." Because of analytics I can say that the first Monday of March in 2011 saw a 135.9% increase in mobile device use over the first Monday in March of 2010. But, last year was a birthing year for the mobile industry. Volume of users will show high growth when compared to 2011.

This "weekend mobile binge" threw me. It's contrary to everything that's been published about internet radio listening - that Monday-Friday are the days when most of it occurs.

Though weekday listening is still highest, consider how mobile is gathering steam. It's not hard to see that the numbers of people listening to internet radio on the weekends will grow, possibly rivaling radio industry "at home" listening at some point in the not-too-distant future.

This is how daily visitors rank at RadioRow.

To help those who are strategizing within the radio industry, here is how weekend internet radio listening has grown at RadioRow since I began tracking it in April 2009.

Here's what mobile listening looks like graphed.

Relative to the number of RadioRow visitors using mobile devices, it's too early to make statements of astonishment. But it's not too early to become aware of what's knocking on the radio industry's door - via mobile.
