With a Headline Like This, Where Is the Radio Industry? |
"Ad money lures established media into uncharted waters." The words at USAToday.com grabbed my eyes.
Finally, I thought, we're seeing some movement. But reading through the article, the words "radio industry," "radio," or "radio stations" aren't found.
Even though the article started with the words "So I ask Mark Cuban ... why the media industry seems to have gone insane lately," there is no mention of radio making a move. Ironic, as Mark Cuban's Broadcast.com (and image) was built on the back of the radio industry. What gives?
Has radio fallen so far out of favor with journalists that it can't/won't be mentioned in articles that directly address "media's" moves online? Or is what the radio industry has done, online, so unimpressive that it's not worth the time? I'll take the latter.
There is plenty of buzz about the transition that's occurring. Arbitron/comScore Media Metrix shows an average AQH of 697,192 persons listening to its online radio network; Webcast Metrics shows strong growth in its listing of online radio stations' AQH. Even Audio Graphics-owned "RadioRow.com," a lesser known web site, shows a 17.6% increase in traffic from Q4 2005 to Q1 2006! Yet even with all the evidence that online radio is taking giant steps, the radio industry can't get mentioned in an article speaking about "established media" and its move online.
Despite all the noise made about an intent to keep abreast of new media, the radio industry is not doing anything that warrants attention. Maybe, being online isn't just about moving your music there.
The radio industry needs better web sites to produce a better user experience, in order to get a little attention from the mainstream media that writes about moving online.
