Radio PAASRSS Continues Slide in WM

According to the May Triton Digital Webcast Metrics report, the Percentage of Average Active Sessions Resulting from Stream Starts (PAASRSS) continues downward for online radio listening.

Monday through Friday SS-to-AAS from January 1, 2013 through May is 0.35%, 0.39%, 0.37%, 0.34%, and 0.31%, respectively. Monday through Sunday SS-to-AAS from January 1, 2013 through May is 0.19%, 0.21%, 0.19%, 0.19%, and 0.17%, respectively.
"April to May, with the exception of ESPN rising 0.04% and CBS remaining flat, all broadcasters suffered a slip Monday through Friday. Each of the pureplays reported in the Top 20 also dropped."

PAASRSS is the percentage of stream starts that stick around long enough to be counted as an average active stream - a much more reliable method of gauging audience than simple counts of either AAS or SS.

April to May, with the exception of ESPN rising 0.04% and CBS remaining flat, all broadcasters suffered a slip Monday through Friday. Each of the pureplays reported in the Top 20 also dropped.

In looking at the same months in the Monday through Sunday SS-to-AAS rankings, you can see that Cumulus, NPR Member Stations, Pandora, and Univision remain flat. ESPN rose 0.02%. Everyone else in the Top 20 dropped at least 0.01%.

Important to note is that 56.08% of Pandora's audience is weekend listening, with 52.19% of Slacker the same. Idobi Radio, another pureplay, registers an astounding 72.39% of its total audience listening on the weekend. The closest broadcaster is Emmis, reporting 41.42% of its audience listening on either Saturday or Sunday. (idobi Network's Tom Cheney has pointed to a discrepancy in tabulation of weekend listening numbers: "M-Sunday numbers is 6am to midnight, while the M-F numbers stop at 8pm." As this presents two different variables it leaves even less information in these reports, and makes it impossible to tabulate this data set. "Weekend Listening" will be deleted from future AG breakouts.)

While the broadcast side of radio has a near lockout on indie artists, introducing music is open wide to internet stations.
