Where Is Talk About HD Radio?
According to iBiquity, there are six Cleveland, Ohio radio stations operating in High Definition. You hear HD Radio positioning statements going across the dial in this town, though I cannot recall any one station's HD tag line.
Usually, if something happens in the radio community here, an acquaintance will question me. It's been a routine for thirty years (going through major contests of the seventies, the start of format fragmentation and traffic reports in the eighties, sports radio and consolidation in the nineties, and radio's latest problems).
People ask me about satellite radio. But HD Radio is not being brought up by friends or business associates with any curiosity. That, to me, is an omen that radio either needs to double its promotion or start admitting it is running down a dead end.
Go to iBiquity's HD Radio page through the link below. See how many stations are currently listed in your state. Weigh the total number of HD radios distributed in your area against the number of subscribers reported by satellite radio. (Admittedly, you'll have to make an educated guess at both numbers.) Then figure in this, HD and satellite radio technology have both existed for 10 years.
Unless radio is able to get the public talking about HD as much as the public is talking about satrad,
the concept of high definition radio is going to drop by the wayside as not financially feasible.
The next sixty-day period is a shoo-in for mega-publicity about satellite radio, and the broadcast radio industry needs to come up with a reason for the press to push Howard Stern's move aside. That's not likely.
If there is no substantial buzz being generated about HD Radio by Q2 2006, start listening for the radio industry's next big announcement. It will have missed its chance with HD.
