Let the Blogs Be Your Lesson

Blah, blah, blah, blah has turned into blog, blog, blog, blog.

Reading most tech-related articles, you'd think bloggers were taking over the world's communications. Maybe not, says a recent CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll. While 75% of America uses the internet, "only one in four Americans are either 'very familiar' or 'somewhat familiar' with blogs."

Over 56% of respondents have "no knowledge of them," which brings us to the hype that's generated within the online world. We've seen it many times before, across a number of new entries. The sky is promised before the apathy begins.

Blogs, podcasting, network affiliation "rings," and a dozen other "hot" new ideas came out of the box with astounding predictions of how quickly they'll change the world.

What those who think this seem to miss is that the vast majority of the world is still years away from using online as an intuitive media. There is still a lot of struggling going on in trying to find what's wanted, then incorporating that into a daily routine.

Blogs are important to a small circle of people. So is satellite radio and internet radio. But to the Jane and Joe Common it's a little more difficult to figure out that RSS feed, or to move from the familiar turf they know: from broadcast to satrad or, when on their computer, using multiple computer applications to enhance each one's potential. New tech to most people is as foreign as... blogs.

It will stay this way for years to come. We're on a long learning curve.
