Podcasting: More Hype Than Response

It's tiring to read so many headlines about the "wave" of podcasting. If you're to believe the press, podcasters are now a formidable force in the entertainment/information world, and broadcasters/online radio stations are going to drown in its wake.

Not true. Won't be true. Someone needs to reveal the hype, and I figure here's the place to do it.

Anyone with memory recalls the number of "next" moments that have hit online. One was Push Technology. Another, that pen newspapers spoke of in 2001 which was supposed to allow readers the ability to scan the newspaper ad's URL and be instantly connected to the web site (don't recall this failure's name). What about the trinket that hung from your keyring which would let you lock into a song title played on your car radio, the... what was it called?

While we read how "podcasting enables anyone with a PC to become a broadcaster," one has to ask how long will it be before these "podcasters" get tired of playing to a few dozen, hundred, thousand people before hanging up their headphones.

With podcasting you're not reaching the "masses," and the payoff isn't going to be a podcaster gaining a top-5 market morning drive slot or advertising dollars. So you have to ask, what is the motivation?

Podcasting is today's CB radio.

As stated in a previous article, there will be an exception or three.

Where podcasting will find its niche is as a tool for marketing products, or by companies wanting to disseminate information, and with a few professionally-produced radio shows.

Individual podcasters are right up there with the thousands of online radio stations run by amateurs - playing to a few for the pleasure of performing.

Ask any professional, after awhile performing is no longer that pleasurable.
